Questions and Myths About Fixing Your Cat and Dog

We hear a lot of reasons people think they should not get their pets fixed. Let's look at a few of them:

Myth:  Dogs and cats should have babies so they feel fulfilled.

Nope.  Dogs and cats have pretty simple goals.  They want to be part of your life, have good food and feel good.  They don't really think about babies.  Sometimes the people think about babies and think it would be fun to have puppies.  But puppies are a lot of work.  They are cute but they are pretty messy and unless they have a good home with people who can take time to train them, they can be pretty bad.

Myth:  Male pets are more manly if they get to keep their balls.

The male animals don't think about this.  Usually it is the male owners who think this <smile>.  But male dogs and cats are not like male grownups.  They don't think about the effect of having a girl friend.  They don't have safe sex <smile> so we end up with lots and lots of unwanted babies.  And then they end up at the pound and when they have no homes, they get killed.  Last year Albuquerque had to kill more than 15,000 animals.  Many manly pets went out at night without thinking.

Myth:  Female pets will get fat and lazy if they get fixed.

Nope.  Not from getting fixed <smile>.  They get fat from too much food and not enough exercise.  Just like their people <smile>.

Does it hurt the animal to get fixed?

Well it sure would if we just did it.  But fixing your animal (called spaying for females and neutering for males) is done by an animal doctor called a veterinarian.  The doctor gives your pet a shot to make it really sleepy and then puts a special tube down its throat.  The doc puts a gas into the tube to keep your animal asleep while the surgery is being done.  Your animal will be given just enough gas to make it sleep but not so much to hurt it.  This is just what is done with people in an operating room.

Is it expensive to get my animal fixed?

This can be true and is often the reason people do not get their animals spayed or neutered. If you do not make a lot of money, you cannot afford $125 to take care of this. This is why No More Homeless Pets is working so hard to help you.
